Allergy Testing at Buckeye Breathe Free

Allergy Testing at Buckeye Breathe Free

Allergies are a common concern among millions of people in the United States. Symptoms and their severity vary depending on what triggered the reaction, how one was exposed to the trigger, and how the immune system responds to the trigger.

Allergy testing is the first step in gaining a deeper understanding of their allergy triggers. Because everyone has a unique allergy profile, allergy testing can help them and their healthcare provider make more informed decisions.

Buckeye Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Centers offers allergy testing to help patients understand their allergies better and explore ways to manage their symptoms.

Learn More About Your Allergies

What Is Allergy Testing?

Allergy testing is a diagnostic approach to assess and determine if the immune system responds to substances known as allergens. Understanding your unique allergy profile via allergy testing is important in understanding how your body could potentially react to allergen exposure as well as in developing an allergy care plan tailored to your unique allergy profile, lifestyle, and personal health goals.

Common allergens we test for include:

  • Pollen
  • Mold
  • Dust mites
  • Pet dander
  • Certain foods, such as milk, nuts, eggs, shellfish, and soy
  • Certain medications
  • Insect sting or venom

What Are the Types of Allergy Testing at Buckeye Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Centers?

Here at Buckeye Breathe Free, our team offers and conducts a range of clinically recognized allergy testing methods, including:

1. Skin prick test

This is the most common method of allergy testing and can help detect immediate allergic reactions.

During the test, small amounts of allergens are applied to the surface of the skin. Then, the skin is gently pricked to introduce the allergen into the system. After 15 to 20 minutes, the care provider checks for any signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling or redness.

2. Intradermal test

When further testing is needed or when results from a skin prick test are unclear, an intradermal allergy test may be conducted.

During this test, a small amount of allergen is injected just under the surface of the skin. Your care provider checks for any signs of an allergic reaction.

This testing method is most commonly used for allergens such as medications or insect venom.

3. Blood test (IgE antibody test)

In cases where skin testing isn’t appropriate, such as due to certain skin conditions or the use of certain medications, a blood test may be the most appropriate allergy testing method. A blood sample is taken to measure IgE antibodies, which can be linked to allergic reactions.

During your consultation, your care provider will determine which method is most appropriate for you, depending on your symptoms, medical history, and overall health status.

Preparing for an Allergy Test

During your consultation before your allergy testing appointment, your care provider will provide you with detailed instructions on how to prepare for the test. These instructions may include:

  • Informing us of any existing medical conditions
  • Avoiding certain medications, such as antihistamines, that may interfere with test results
  • Wearing comfortable and loose-fitting clothing to your appointment
  • Eating a light meal before your appointment

What Happens After Allergy Testing?

Once test results are available, we will review:

  • Which allergens triggered a response
  • The severity and pattern of your symptoms
  • How these clinical findings affect your overall health

Then, we will work together to create and develop a personalized allergy care and treatment plan, which may include any of the following:

  • Medications: Decongestants, antihistamines, and nasal saline sprays can help minimize the severity of allergy symptoms in some patients
  • Immunotherapy: Allergy shots (FDA-approved) or allergy drops (not FDA-approved for this use and may be used off-label under medical supervision when appropriate) may help the immune system reduce its sensitivity to certain allergens over time
  • Environmental or lifestyle changes: Making adjustments in your home, school, or work environment can minimize allergen exposure
