Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD) Treatment at Buckeye Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD) Treatment

Explore Treatment Options for Chronic Ear Pain and Pressure

The Eustachian tubes are what connect the middle ear to the back of the nose and the upper throat. They equalize ear pressure and drain fluid from the middle ear. They typically open during swallowing or yawning. However, sometimes, these tubes become blocked or may fail to open properly. This contributes to a condition called Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD), which can be associated with common symptoms such as ear pain and pressure, muffled hearing, and recurring ear infections.

Here at Buckeye Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Centers, we offer comprehensive ENT evaluations to diagnose and treat various disorders, such as ETD.

Learn More About ETD

What Are the Common Symptoms of ETD?

ETD symptoms vary per patient, but common signs to look out for include:

  • Ear pain and discomfort
  • A feeling of fullness or stuffiness in the ear
  • One or both ears feel “plugged”
  • Muffled or reduced hearing
  • Clicking or popping sounds in the ear
  • Ringing in the ears without an external source, also known as tinnitus

ETD symptoms may worsen with altitude changes, such as using elevators, driving through mountains, or flying on planes. If your symptoms worsen or persist, schedule a consultation with your healthcare provider.

Does ETD Cause Chronic Ear Infections?

When the eustachian tubes malfunction and don’t work as they should, fluid can build up in the ears. In some cases, fluid buildup from ETD may contribute to recurrent ear infections, which can cause common symptoms like:

  • Dizziness
  • Balance issues
  • Headaches
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fever

These symptoms may also be associated with other conditions. Scheduling a consultation with an ENT care provider is important to help determine the most appropriate treatment for your condition.

How Is ETD Treated?

Treatment for ETD will depend on the severity of the symptoms, underlying cause, and other personal health factors. Treatment may include non-surgical and surgical options.

For Mild or Temporary ETD: Medications

Mild or temporary cases of ETD can benefit from medications such as:

  • Decongestants
  • Antihistamines
  • Nasal corticosteroid sprays
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers

Temporary cases of ETD linked to altitude changes or the common cold may resolve on their own.

For Severe or Chronic ETD: Balloon Dilation

For severe or chronic cases of ETD, your care provider may recommend a procedure called balloon dilation.

Balloon dilation is a minimally invasive procedure that may provide benefits for appropriate patients with ETD. It uses an FDA-approved balloon catheter to potentially improve Eustachian tube function. However, FDA approval refers to the device itself and is not a guarantee of results for all patients.

A consultation with your healthcare provider can help determine if this procedure is suitable for you, based on your clinical findings, the severity of your symptoms, and your health goals.

Here’s what you need to know about balloon dilation:

  • It’s typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia.
  • The procedure takes approximately one hour or less.
  • No incisions or stitches are made, so there is no visible scarring.
  • Although recovery and healing timelines vary, in some cases, patients may resume light activities within 24 to 48 hours.
  • The procedure is designed to improve ear pressure and fluid drainage. Individual results vary. Your healthcare provider can assess your eligibility for this procedure.

Here’s how the procedure works:

  • During the procedure, the doctor inserts a small balloon catheter into the affected Eustachian tube through the nasal passage.
  • Then, the balloon is gently inflated, widening the passages.
  • The balloon is inflated and then removed.

Not all patients with ETD will need balloon dilation. A consultation with your ENT care provider can help determine if this is the appropriate treatment for your condition.

Disclaimer: Individual results and recovery times vary by individual. Outcomes are not guaranteed. Your healthcare provider will guide you through post-procedure expectations.
