Septoplasty A Surgical Treatment Option at Buckeye Breathe Free

Septoplasty

A Surgical Treatment Option for Persistent Nasal Congestion

Persistent nasal obstruction can be frustrating, especially if it makes breathing difficult. One possible cause that can contribute to persistent sinus issues is a deviated septum.

At Buckeye Breathe Free, we offer comprehensive nasal evaluations to determine if a deviated septum is present and whether septoplasty is an appropriate treatment option based on the severity of your symptoms and nasal anatomy.

Learn More About Septoplasty

What Is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is an outpatient sinus procedure designed to correct a deviated septum–an anatomical variation in which the nasal septum (the wall of bone and cartilage dividing the nose into left and right nostrils) is misaligned and off-center. This misalignment can contribute to obstructed airflow and chronic nasal congestion.

During a septoplasty procedure, your ENT doctor repositions the off-center nasal septum with the goal of improving nasal airflow and breathing.

Disclaimer: Results vary per individual based on individual nasal anatomy and healing. Outcomes are not guaranteed. Consult with your ENT care provider to help determine if septoplasty is the appropriate procedure for your condition.

When Is Septoplasty Considered as an Option?

Not all patients with a deviated septum will require septoplasty. Your doctor can help determine if this is the appropriate course of action for your condition and the severity of your symptoms. Your doctor may recommend the procedure if you experience:

  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
  • Persistent nasal congestion that doesn’t respond to standard medications
  • Persistent postnasal drip
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Sleep disturbances, such as snoring, which, in some cases, may be linked to structural nasal issues like a deviated septum

These symptoms can be due to more than one thing, and not all cases will benefit from a septoplasty procedure. A consultation with your ENT care provider can help evaluate your condition and determine if septoplasty is the appropriate course of treatment.

Recovery and Healing After Septoplasty

In most cases, septoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to return home the same day. However, recovery timelines vary per patient. During your pre-procedure consultation, your ENT doctor will walk you through the healing and recovery process after the procedure.

While it varies per case, it may include:

  • Pain medication
  • Nasal packing
  • Follow-up appointments to monitor healing and recovery
  • Avoiding strenuous activities as advised by your doctor

Are There Risks and Complications?

While generally well-tolerated, septoplasty, like all surgical procedures, carries potential risks and complications, including:

  • Bleeding or infection
  • Temporary swelling or discomfort in the treatment area
  • Persistent nasal obstruction
  • Changes in the shape of the nose
  • Need for revision surgery, which is a rare instance

During your consultation, your ENT care provider will thoroughly explain all the potential benefits and risks associated with septoplasty.
